About the Australian Long-Term Care Interest Group
The Australian Long-Term Care Interest Group (ALTCIG)
Our Interest Group aims to advocate, foster critical dialogue and promote multi-disciplinary collaboration, during this contemporary transformation of the Australian aged care sector and the recent historical shift to a rights-based legislative framework following the landmark findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. This comes at a time of a rapidly ageing population with complex health and social needs, persistent systemic and workforce challenges, and an urgent need to address issues unique to contemporary Australian aged care settings.
This interest group provides a dedicated forum for academics, clinicians, policymakers, and consumer advocates to engage with the complex challenges of modern aged care delivery in Australia. We seek to:
- Facilitate Research Exchange: Share contemporary findings on clinical governance, dementia care, and person-centred outcomes.
- Inform Policy and Practice: Provide a platform for robust critique of legislative reforms and their practical impact on residents and the nursing workforce.
- Support Collaborative Innovation: Identify emerging models of care—such as virtual ED interfaces and restorative care pathways—that promote autonomy and “dignity of risk.”
- Foster Professional Partnerships: Build bridges across the sector to ensure that reform is not just a regulatory requirement, but a lived reality for every older Australian.
The ALTCIG will host a regular series of webinars, distribute policy briefs and peer-reviewed resources, and serve as a collaborative hub for those committed to shaping a world-class long-term care system In Australia.
