While receiving and transition countries “gain” from care migration, covering their gaps in long-term senior care, it is important to understand what is happening at the bottom of transnational care chains. This GOLTC webinar is dedicated to the case of Ukraine, where senior care has been managed predominantly by families amid long‐term demographic aging, emigration, neoliberal reforms, a fragmented and poorly regulated landscape, in the context of war imposed destruction and massive population displacement. How do families navigate the existing care infrastructure and arrange care at the bottom of care hierarchies, under various circumstances shaped by outmigration, broader state policies and the ongoing war?
The webinar will cover:
- Introduction to the Global Observatory of Long-Term care and welcome (Adelina Comas-Herrera, Care Policy and Evaluation Centre, LSE, UK)
- Introduction to the Migration, Mobility, and Care Workers Interest Group (Ewa Palenga-Möllenbeck, Goethe University Frankfurt)
- Presentation: “Unpromising Sector”: Senior Care in Wartime Ukraine (Oksana Dutchak, NGO Institute for Systemic Alternatives)
- Discussion (Ewa Palenga-Möllenbeck, Goethe University Frankfurt)
