We are delighted to share with you a new GOLTC Methods Guide on Synthetic Control.
The GOLTC Methods Guides are short introductions to useful methods for Long-Term Care research written by researchers who use these methods and want to share their experience and knowledge.
The Synthetic Control methods guide has been written by Cristhian Jaramillo-Huaman and Javiera Cartagena-Farias (London School of Economics and Political Science).
Synthetic Control is a quasi-experimental method used to estimate the impact of a policy or intervention. The method compares the outcomes of the unit exposed to the intervention with those of a group of units that were not affected by it, also known as the donor pool. The main goal is to estimate a counterfactual – i.e., what would have happened to the treated unit if the intervention had not taken place. These methods are particularly useful to evaluate policy interventions implemented at a national level (e.g., one country adopting a specific type of care model).
You can read the more about this method and how to use it here.
