We are delighted to share the new GOLTC Long-Term Care System profile for India, written by Jayeeta Rajagopalan (Care Policy and Evaluation Centre (CPEC), London School of Economics and Political Science).
Highlights from the LTC system profile for India:
- There is no organized formal long-term care system in India. Services are highly fragmented and the LTC system is highly dependent on families to provide care in their own homes.
- Long-term care services such as residential and day care facilities do exist, such services vary significantly across the country; concentrated in certain states and large metropolitan areas and are often associated with high out-of-pocket (OOP) costs.
- Efforts have been made to support older people through various policies and programmes, which include components of long-term care and social welfare.
- Certain states, that are at an advanced stage of demographic and epidemiological transition, are developing local policies and programmes to better support older people, people with disabilities and terminal illnesses.
