We are delighted to share the new GOLTC Long-Term Care system profile for Malta, written by Maria Aurora Fenech and Roberta Sultana (Department of Gerontology and Dementia Studies, University of Malta).
Highlights from the LTC system profile for Malta:
- The system is characterised by a fragmented mixed economy model, with multiple ministries involved and expanding private system participation.
- There is significant reliance on family care and residential care and persistent waiting lists for access to residential care.
- However, there is a strategic shift towards home and community-based care, with a wide range of services avilable.
- Workforce shortages are critical.
- New reforms include the development of a comprehensive legal framework for Long-Term care to improve access to affordable, high quality care.
