Başak Akkan

Başak Akkan is an Associate Professor of Social Policy at the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Bilgi University. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Social Science from Utrecht University and an MS in European Social Policy from the London School of Economics.  She has published in several scientific journals, including New Perspectives on Turkey, Child Indicators Research, Children and Youth Services, Feminist Theory, Historical Social Research, Journal of Gender Studies, Social Inclusion, and Social Politics. She is the co-editor of the book Overlapping Inequalities in the Welfare State: Strengths and Challenges of Intersectionality Framework, published by Springer in 2024.  She is an associate editor at the International Journal of Care and Caring.

Research interests

Her research interests are in the theories of justice and inequality,  focusing on intersectionality, care regimes in the Mediterranean, comparative care policies and child well-being studies.
