Emily Ong
A Dementia Expert by Experience, patient and consumer advocate with special interest in environment and dementia, rehabilitation, disability rights and employment, women and care partners. Emily is co-founder and pioneer project lead of the Dementia Alliance International (DAI) Environmental Design Special Interest Group which is an international advocacy group that provides technical advice on enabling environment design including transportation and assistive technology. She is a member and former Board Member of DAI, and an elected Board Member of Alzheimer’s Disease International(ADI) since 2022 to represent the voice of persons with dementia. She is on the ADI Accreditation Global Review Panel that looks into standards and reducing the variation dementia care around the world through structured skills and approaches. Emily is also a focus group member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Dementia Observatory that is responsible in reviewing resource materials submitted to the GDO. She is a member of the WHO Guidelines Development Group on risk reduction of cognitive decline and dementia. Back at home, she initiated the online peer support group “La Kopi” in 2021 amid the Covid-19 lockdown. She co-designed and was a co-facilitator of the Dementia Singapore Voices For Hope program for five years. Together with her two friends, Emily co-produced Voices of Asia, a collection of narratives from 13 countries to encourage others with lived experience including care partners to step up to break down the stigma and discrimination through their stories.
Emily previously worked as a learning consultant in learning disabilities and conducted workshops for early childhood teachers and parents. Since retirement she remains active in providing volunteer service as an advisor in special educational needs and working with school teachers and parents.
