Hannelore Strauven

KU Leuven

Hannelore Strauven

I am a postdoctoral researcher in the department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at the faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven, currently investigating (technological) innovation to promote continence in nursing home residents. In this position, I am a member of the research group e-Media Research Lab, that develops and implements novel techniques to enhance the human condition with embodied media.

In addition to my research, I am the program coordinator of the Advanced Master of Innovative Health Technology that has a specific focus on the integration of different technologies and methodologies into usable systems. Here, recent trends in wearable sensors, bioelectronics, artificial intelligence, robotics and healthcare apps are combined to inspire students to conceive and implement novel integrated solutions that can be tested and used by patients and health care professionals.

In my PhD, I conducted a human-centred design and development of an ambient monitoring technology to support continence care in nursing homes. This research was aimed to support both care personnel and residents by improving the quality of care and quality of life.

Hannelore received a Master in Industrial Engineering Electronics/ICT (2009) and a Master in Biomedical Science Nanotechnology & Bio-electronics (2011). She started her first job as an electrical engineer at a distribution grid operator in Flanders. Still eager to learn, she followed and succeeded a postgraduate Relation & Communication Management (2016). After four years in industry, she decided to change her path and started a PhD, finalised in 2024.
