Mohana Das
I am an interdisciplinary researcher and practitioner working at the intersection of design, gerontology, and the social sciences. My work centers on creating inclusive environments that promote dignity, wellbeing, and social justice for older adults, particularly within institutional and urban settings. With expertise in participatory research, both quantitative and qualitative methods, and evidence-based design, I am dedicated to developing innovative solutions that address the complex needs of ageing populations.
Currently, I am pursuing my doctoral research at the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where I focus on enhancing design strategies for elderly care homes in high-density cities like Hong Kong. My research aims to develop effective design assessment tools that can inform and improve the quality of life for older residents in urban care environments.
Previously, I earned a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Politecnico di Milano, graduating cum laude in 2020. My thesis, “Healthcare Architecture for Emergency Department: The Free Standing Emergency Department (FSED) Model and its Applications to Tackle ED Overcrowding,” involved a comprehensive research process that resulted in a meta-design proposal. This work established a foundation for the real-world application of the FSED model in European healthcare contexts, offering replicable solutions to the pressing issue of emergency department overcrowding.
I have participated in and received awards in over 15 national and international architecture and urban design competitions across India, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Belgium. My research interests include healthcare architecture, design for the elderly, design education, spatial planning, and hospital design. I have also presented my work at both national and international conferences, contributing to the discourse on public health and design.
I am enthusiastic about interdisciplinary collaboration and welcome opportunities to work with researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who share a vision for building more inclusive and equitable societies for people of all ages.
