Nusrat Husain
Since the beginning of my medical career, I have been dedicated to addressing the significant treatment gap in mental health care in low- and middle-income countries (LAMIC). After completing my initial psychiatry training, I earned a Diploma in Public Health (DPH) in Pakistan and a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from Emory University, USA. Subsequently, I completed a Diploma in Psychiatry for Developing Countries at the University of Manchester, where I was honored with the “WHO Prize for the Best Diplomat.”
In collaboration with UK and local charities in LAMIC, I focus on capacity building and generating evidence to improve mental health care. At Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, I support service development and the integration of mental health services for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. I also provide training in Assessment and Cultural Evaluation (ACE) both locally and nationally.
I organize the “Culture & International Mental Health” conference in Manchester, a joint initiative between the University of Toronto and the University of Manchester. Additionally, I lead a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the University of Manchester and Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) to foster joint research, teaching, and training. DUHS, one of Asia’s largest health sciences universities, operates five medical schools.

Research interests | I am a leading expert in culturally adapted psychosocial therapies and innovative pharmacological treatments for mental illness. My research focuses on improving access to mental health care for ethnic minority and marginalized communities, addressing the global Mental Health treatment Gap (MH-Gap), particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LAMICs). My work also informs the development of mental health services in the UK and other high-income countries. I have successfully led several externally funded projects supported by organizations such as the MRC, Wellcome Trust, NIHR, SMRI, CIDA, British Council, and Grand Challenges Canada. He has established research units in Pakistan and Kenya, with plans to expand to Bangladesh, the Middle East, and Brazil. Since 2010, my research group has trained over 500 clinicians in quantitative and qualitative research methods. In response to limited mental health nursing training in LAMICs, he initiated the first British Council-funded training program for nurses in psychosocial interventions, now integrated into the nursing curriculum in Pakistan. I have published extensively in world-class journals such as Lancet and contributed to book chapters. I have presented at numerous national and international conferences and serve on the editorial boards of prestigious journals. |
