We are delighted to share the new GOLTC Long-Term Care system profile for South Africa, written by Professor Elena Moore (University of Cape Town).
Highlights from the LTC system profile for South Africa:
- Long-term care (LTC) provision in South Africa is grounded almost entirely in unpaid family support, reflecting a “familiarism by default model”.
- Most Long-Term Care -related public spending goes towards pensions.
- Long-Term Care services are mostly delivered through Non-Profit Organisations, which are mostly state subsidized but subsidies are low and insufficient.
- The environment in which most older people live are challenging, with a third of older people having no access to water inside their homes.
- There are some good examples of low-cost, high impact community based services.
